LITTLE BLACK BREAK

My name’s Sebastian Black, and my life as I know it is over. My little black book days were numbered the minute I met Rosslyn. She became my one and only and lightened my dark soul.
But now my past is threatening my future—threatening the woman I love. I’ll do whatever it takes to protect her. Even if I have to lie—pretend to cheat—I need her to leave my world and remain safe.
Breaking her heart is killing me, but I refuse to let my old sins destroy the only good in my life.
If you love her, let her go. If you’re dangerous like me, pray she stays away. I won’t let her get caught in the crossfire. No matter who I have to break.

“Sebastian says touch yourself.” His husky voice brushed the side of my neck, sending chills to my toes. “Slide your fingers into your sweet pussy so I can suck them clean.”
I melted beneath him, my thighs widening automatically as my wandering fingers rolled over my clit. Sensation moved over me and my body tensed. Sebastian was the king of foreplay, leaving me wet and ready—throbbing so hard I thought I’d die if he didn’t put me out of my misery.
“Please, Sebastian. Give me what I want,” I begged.
All this time together and he was still able to make me beg for his touch—make me breathe his name until he soothed the sweet ache he’d built between my thighs.
“Ah, come on, Mrs. Black. How do you expect me to hold out when you beg so sweetly?”
“I’m not Mrs. Black yet, Mr. Black,” I teased.
Sebastian had officially proposed the night I graduated from Tech with my Associate’s in Criminal Justice. He’d offered to pay for an expensive four-year college, but I was determined to do things on my own, which meant Tech it was. And with my past and the many years I’d spent needing justice for the murder of my parents, criminal justice made sense.
His proposal was unexpected since everyone who knew Sebastian knew he wasn’t the marrying kind. Even I was shocked when he dropped to one knee in the middle of our bedroom and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him.
I’d had some champagne at the celebratory dinner after my graduation ceremony, and I wasn’t sure I’d heard him correctly, but then he looked up at me with pure adoration and I knew—I just knew—I never wanted to be away from him. I’d never love another man the way I loved Sebastian, and no other man would ever love me the way he did.
I said yes, and we spent the rest of the night making love.
It was beautiful.
Perfection.
Everything Sebastian embodied.
That was a week ago, and his look of adoration still lingered in his expression, but as he looked down at me, it was a raw, unadulterated need that filled his clear blue eyes.
His grin was dark and dangerous as he pulled my fingers from my trembling body and sucked the glistening moisture from their length—his tongue flicking at the tips. Desire struck me deep and I bit into my lip to control the animalistic growl that crawled up the back of my throat.
Dark, damp hair fell over his scorching blue eyes and I brushed it away with my free hand, losing my fingers in its thickness. My hips lifted from the plush mattress, begging on their own for his length.
He chuckled, the sound rich and exotic as it rumbled across my skin.
“Official or not, you’re mine, Rosslyn. You’ve been mine since the first time I laid eyes on you. Do you understand?”
His thick cock massaged my entrance soothing the ache briefly as he teased me in return. With his skin beneath my nails, I dug my fingers deep into his flesh as I tried to pull his body into mine.
“Now, Sebastian. I need you,” I breathed.
“No, beautiful, not until you give me what I want.”
I knew what he wanted, but like him, I liked to make him beg for it. It was why we worked.
Push and pull.
Give and take.
I was able to hook Sebastian Black because I wasn’t afraid to fight him—to make him quake with want, quiver with need. We drove each other crazy, and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Still, I pressed my lips together, holding out for a little longer.
He pushed against me harder, my insides burning for his intrusion.
“Fuck,” he rumbled. “Say it, Rosslyn. Tell me what I want to hear and I’ll give you what you want. I’ll give you what you want all night long, baby.”
I lifted my hips to draw him in, but he pulled back letting the cool air rush between us.
“Give me what I want and I’ll tell you what you want to hear,” I countered.
Again, he snickered; the evident strain in his voice letting me know I was close to winning.
His body was stiff above me, his biceps trembling from holding up his weight and his hips shaking against my core. I could see the defeat in his eyes as he licked his lips and his breath quickened. He was incredibly sexy all the time, but nothing beat Sebastian in the heat of the moment—the seconds before he climbed into me and set both our bodies aflame.
And then he shifted and filled me.
Deep.
Thick.
Stretching me so completely I mewed in appreciation.
He closed his eyes against the pleasure, and we sighed in unison at the sweet relief.
“Is this what you want, dirty girl? You want my cock deep inside you?” His breathing was erratic; his eyes steeled in preparation for taking me hard and fast the way I liked it.
I nodded as I internally celebrated winning our little game of tug-of-war.
“Say it, Rosslyn.” He pulled back and pushed into me—hard and swift—deeper and deeper with each thrust. It felt amazing.
He felt wonderful.
“Fuck, you feel incredible,” he growled. “I’ll never get over how perfect you feel. So tight—so wet—wrapped around my cock.”
My toes dug into the mattress as desire worked its way from my hips and into my stomach. I loved the way Sebastian talked to me—especially during sex. It was an aphrodisiac for my senses, and it made me feel powerful. It made me feel wanted—like he could never get enough of me, which was good considering I knew I’d never get enough of him.
“Say it, baby. I need to hear it.”
I loved it when he begged—the strain in his voice fulfilling me emotionally while his body pleasured me physically. The tension in his voice thick and ready to snap. He wanted me—he needed me to soothe his ache the way he was soothing mine.
It was physical, but it was also mental.
Emotionally, Sebastian needed more. He needed me to reach inside his mind and soothe him in a way I couldn’t with my body. Spiritually, he needed depth. To know that I was latching on to him and never leaving his side. All his life he’d been left. Put on the side of the road and never collected. I’d always known how broken he was, but I also knew it was my job to keep him together.
I opened my mouth to say the words he longed to hear, to give him the relief he was giving me, but he plowed into my center once more and the words melted on my tongue leaving a pleasured moan in their stead.
“Say it, Rosslyn,” he demanded.
He was getting louder, his body stronger—faster—ruthless.
I was lost in a sea of baby blue as he stared down at me with determination. Sweat dotted his brow, threatening to drip onto my flaming skin. I dug my fingernails into the flesh of his firm ass, making him growl. He quickened, taking my body with passion—slamming into me—pushing me to the head of the bed and to the brink of release.
“I can’t … I can’t say it,” I stuttered.
Confusion swept over his expression. “Why not?”
And then I smiled because I knew I’d officially won our little game. It wasn’t often that I won in our little game of wits and foreplay, but I’d held out regardless of the intensity of his movements—the passion in his eyes—the pleasure that flowed through me so completely.
I’d won.
“Because you didn’t say Sebastian says.”

Just about everyone called Woodman "Woodman" except Gran and sometimes Cain. Gran insisted on calling him by his Christian name. Cain used "Josiah" and "Woodman" interchangeably with no real rhyme or reason that Ginger could follow.
"Rumor is you're gonna marry Josiah someday," said Gran, her sixty-something blue eyes merry. "But what do you say?"
Ginger giggled self-consciously, thinking about her grandmother's question, something clenching in her twelve-year-old heart as she thought about marrying sensible Woodman and abandoning her wild feelings for his cousin, Cain.
"I don't know," she said, feeling her forehead crease in confusion.
"Or maybe you're thinkin' you want to marry…Cain," said Gran softly.
Cain, with his jet black hair and ice blue eyes, appeared like a vision before her, and Ginger's heart thumped faster. The way he'd run off to see Mary-Louise Walker this afternoon made her brown eyes spitting green with jealousy. The way he swaggered made her breath catch. Woodman was so predictable, so safe in comparison.
Then again, Woodman hadn't exactly been predictable this afternoon, had he? He'd surprised her with the gift and even more with his words. His body had been hard and warm when he'd held her, the embrace awakening something new and foreign within her. Something she wasn't sure she wanted. Something that didn't feel safe and even scared her a little bit. She pulled her fingers away from the charm bracelet and faced her Gran.
"What do I do if I love them both?"
Her grandmother's eyes, which had been mostly teasing, flinched, and her mouth tilted down in a sympathetic frown, which made her face seem so serious and sober.
"Choose, dollbaby," said her Gran. "Someday you'll have to choose."
The same feeling that she'd had in the barn, when Cain had yelled, "Jump to the one you love the most, darlin'!" flared up within her—a fierce refusal to love one cousin more than the other, to give up one in lieu of the other.
Choose? Her memories skated back through a dozen years on McHuid's Farm that had always included Cain and Woodman. When they were little children, they played together, swimming buck naked in the creek and racing over the green hills and pastures in impromptu games of tag. As the boys grew up, they started working with Cain's daddy, Klaus, who was her father's right-hand man, mucking out the stables and grooming the horses. She'd run down to the barn every day after her lessons to see them, working right along beside them until they were all covered in hay, dust and barn grime.
Though the Wolframs weren't generally included in the McHuid's active social life, the Woodmans were, which meant that in addition to seeing Cain and Woodman on the farm, she also saw Woodman at every holiday and birthday party…and they always managed to slip out unseen with some smuggled sweets for Cain.
They were the Three Musketeers of McHuid's Farm and Ginger knew both boys as well as she knew herself—Cain's smirking, hot-headed, impulsive ways, and Woodman's level-headed patience, caution and kindness. Regardless of their differences, she also knew that as the only children of twin sisters, Cain and Woodman were much closer than most cousins. Genetically speaking, they were half-brothers, and while they surely liked to tease and torture each other, they wouldn't hesitate to jump into front of a train to save the other's skin either.
In Ginger's mind, she envisioned them like two halves of the same coin that she held carefully in the palm of her hand.
She loved them both desperately.
Choose?
No, her heart protested. Impossible.
"What if I can't?" she whispered, leaning back and resting her head on her grandmother's comforting shoulder.
"Then you'll lose them both," said her grandmother softly.
Ginger's shoulders fell, relaxing in surrender as she closed her eyes against the burn of tears.
"But don't let's think about that now, dollbaby," said Gran, leaning her head upon her granddaughter's, the constant tremble of her unpredictable body almost soothing to Ginger as they rocked side by side in the twilight. "You're just twelve today. You've got your whole life ahead of you."

CHAPTER 7 – EXCERPT

I closed my eyes and balled my hands into fists to hide the fact that I was now trembling. No one knew about the real purpose of my blog other than my friends, and I had just spilled my secret to a man I’d basically known for a total of four hours. The one alcoholic beverage I’d consumed tonight had been digested hours ago, but suddenly my stomach went sour.
Oh, God. What had I done?
“So that’s why you’re always bringing home all kinds of guys?” he asked, his voice unexpectedly calm and inquisitive. “Holy shit. Are you gonna write about me?”
I turned to him and shook my head furiously. “No! I have no intention of writing about you.” He didn’t seem convinced. “You’re the one who asked me out,” I reminded him. “I had no intention of dating you, much less sleeping with you.”
“You’re not making this any easier to swallow,” he said as he pulled the truck into the apartment complex.
“That’s what she said. Oh, God. I’m sorry.”
He laughed. “That’s okay. I walked right into that one.”
I sighed again as I tried to think of how to explain this without bearing my soul to him, but I couldn’t think of anything. “I don’t know what it is about you, but you make me want to do things I’ve never done.”
He cocked an eyebrow as he parked the truck. “Such as?”
“Like, tell you about what I do for a living.”
“So I should be honored?” he said as he pulled the key out of the ignition.
I looked into his eyes for a moment and thought of when he asked me to be his pick girl earlier tonight. “Absolutely,” I replied. “You see, I have a rule. I don’t write about any of my dates until the relationship is over. But…” I pressed my lips together as I gazed into his eyes and gathered the courage I needed to continue. “I’ve always told myself that when the right guy comes along, I won’t ever have to write about him because…we’ll never be over.”
He broke eye contact as he stared at the steering wheel for a moment. “You’re telling me that you plan on quitting your job when you find the right guy?”

EXCERPT

PATCH PARTY
Lauren rolled her eyes and turned to leave. I wasn’t going to let her go anywhere. I reached for her and caught her wrist, stopping her from leaving.
“Going somewhere?”
“Yeah, home,” she sneered, tugging her arm free. I’d never seen her like this, so angry, so fucking hot. She turned toward Blackie, took his drink from his hand and threw the whiskey in my face before handing the empty glass back to him. “Congratulations, you’re a dick with a patch,” she said, before turning and walking toward the door.
I sputtered whiskey from my mouth, lifting the hem of my t-shirt to dry my face, trying to ignore the surrounding chuckles.
“You better marry her because if you don’t I will,” Bones said, as he came up beside me and handed me a stack of napkins.
“Fuck off,” I shouted, throwing the napkins up in the air like confetti before I took off after her. “Lauren,” I shouted as I stepped outside. Scanning the grounds, I found her stalking through the parking lot.
I ran after her but Kitten had speed even in those heels she had on that threatened to take her down.
“Lauren, baby…Kitten,” I called.
She froze in her tracks and turned around.
Hallelujah!
Oh, shit!
She bent down, removing one of her high heels and swung it like a Cy-Young pitcher, aiming straight for my head.
“Are you fucking crazy?” I shouted, dodging death by a high heel.
“Oh, you think I’m crazy?” She asked incredulously, looking every bit crazy. No question about it. “Maybe I am crazy! I mean, I must be because I’m here, right? Standing here in my little black dress, against my better judgement, because well, tonight was a big night for you and I…” she let her words trail off. “…I am crazy,” she confirmed, shaking her head in disbelief.
“Kitten,” I started, reaching for her.
She flicked my forehead with her fingers.
“Ouch! What the hell did you do that for?” I shouted, rubbing my forehead.
“There is plenty more where that came from, buddy!” She threatened, as she poked my chest with her finger. I had had enough of this shit. I grabbed her hips, hauling her up against me and maneuvered her legs to wrap around my waist. She didn’t like that at all and yelped as I held her in place.
“Riggs, put me down,” she yelled.
“You don’t really want me to put you down,” I ground out. My patience was gone, my nerves frayed. She kicked my back and I pinched her leg as I turned and slammed her up against the wall of the Dog Pound.
“Came here for a reason, Kitten, now it’s time to tell me what that reason is,” I whispered against her ear.
“It doesn’t matter,” she squealed, as I ran my hands up her thighs.
“I disagree,” I argued, glancing down at her legs locked around my waist. “I like your dress,” I said, sliding my hands underneath it.
“You should,” she sneered, wrapping her arms around my neck. “I wore it for you,” she rasped.
Sweetest fucking words I ever heard.

RELEASE DAY BLITZ REVIEW: Seduction by Lauren Smith

SEDUCTION
Her British Stepbrother (Part 2)
Lauren Smith
Releasing March 8th, 2016
Forever Yours

The sequel to FORBIDDEN.

Tristan is a man who knows what he wants. And he wants Kat in his bed. All he has to do is convince her they belong together . . .

Kat knows the connection she and Tristan share is special. Her British bad boy is too much of everything: too hot, too arrogant, too irresistible to stay away from. He's her addiction and one night with him isn't enough.

That's what hurts the most. They can't date, can't be a normal couple, not when their parents are getting married. Because now that she knows he's going to be her stepbrother, no one can ever find out what they've done . . .

ONLY $0.99
Make sure to pick up FORBIDDEN (Part 1) and
Pre-Order CLIMAX (Part 3) coming May 3rd, 2016
Both ONLY $0.99

Kat had just stepped out of the shower and wrapped a towel around her body when she heard the doorknob rattle.

“Just a minute!” It was probably her dad trying to check on her.

The brass knob rattled again.

“Almost done,” she said as she tucked the towel more firmly about her body, mentally smacking herself for forgetting to pack her long robe.

When she unlocked the door, it flew open instantly. A shirtless Tristan stood there, holding a towel, looking down at her with those hypnotic blue-green eyes.

Her eyes, without approval from her brain, swept down over his body: the sculpted abs, the indentations of his pelvic muscles, and the way his jeans hung low on his hips. Hips she’d held and dug her nails into the other night as he’d pounded into her. Her lower body twisted and clenched with sudden desire at the mere memory of his raw, powerful possession of her. She couldn’t forget the feel of his body, pressing her down, his cock filling her until she couldn’t breathe. The way he’d owned every part of her.

Damn. How had she convinced herself that avoiding him was a good idea? Right now she wanted to drop the towel and beg him to take her, damn the consequences.

“Are you finished?” His tone was pleasant. No hint of fire, no branding scorch of his gaze…just politeness. He was doing exactly what she’d asked him to do. Treat her like a stepsister he’d only just met. Before today’s awful revelation of their parents’ engagement, he would have smirked at her, teased, and tried to steal the towel… A pang of longing for the playful part of him swept through her. God, she missed that.

What would it take to win one little smile from him, one that was meant for her, and not tempered by his polite distance.

I asked for this. It didn’t make her feel any better.

“I’m done.” Heat rushed to her face from embarrassment at her inner thoughts. Thankfully he had no idea how conflicted she was feeling right now. Or how her body was reacting to being so close to him and being denied his touch. Like a thirsty woman crawling across a Saharan desert and glimpsing an island oasis only to discover it was a mirage.

He made a low, gruff noise, not exactly a response, but it sent shivers through her. She couldn’t forget the sounds he’d made in bed two nights ago. He’d been half-animal, growling, nipping, showing her a rough side to passion, one she knew she would always crave. Tristan had pierced a dark part of her sexual side, exposing it to the light, and she couldn’t deny that it existed, nor did she want to.

He slid past her, their bodies brushed in the narrow space of the doorway. Heat exploded through her, and she froze, trying to control her reaction to him.

Tristan froze, too, their bodies pressed close. His warm breath fanned her cheeks and his natural masculine scent enveloped her. Memories of their night together came flooding back, no matter how she tried to keep it out.

He lifted his hand to her cheek, pausing a second before he would have touched her. She met his gaze, her breaths shallow as his lips twitched in a ghost of a smile. Then he brushed his knuckles over her skin. Fire rippled in the wake of that “barely there” caress. Every part of her was aware of him and his closeness.

Would it be so hard to keep a relationship between them a secret from their parents? Maybe they could…

“Please…” she begged, unsure of what she really wanted.

“Please, what?” he replied, in that dark, low tone that made her purr inside like a cat in heat. He slowly backed her into the wall next to the shower, closing the door behind him. He placed his hands on either side of her head, caging her in, and lowered his face to hers.

A feather-light, teasing kiss. A nip at her bottom lip. She clenched her thighs together, feeling the rush of wet heat in response to his subtle aggression. How could he affect her like this? His touch, his kiss, sent her body into riotous waves of longing for him.

He nuzzled her neck, licking and nibbling on the sensitive spots that sent electric pulses from her head to her toes.

Kat grabbed his shoulders, digging her fingers into his hot, bare skin. The towel around her body stretched against her breasts as she struggled to control her breathing.

His hands dropped from the wall to her waist, tugging on the folds of the towel that barely covered her.

It would be so easy, he could lift my towel up and fuck me right here against the wall. Just one more time, we could…

The towel dropped to the floor.

After the ending in Forbidden, I was really excited to start Seduction! I will admit that I did enjoy Forbidden more than Seduction because it wasn't as angsty. The first book had its angst but we got to see how Tristan and Kat were together and in this book, they're trying to figure what to do after the bombshell they were left with. But just because I didn't enjoy this one as much, doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy it all - because I did! I loved seeing the magic between Kat and Tristan and how much they care about each other. Seduction was still an excellent read and I can't wait to see how it all ends!

Well, just like I enjoyed Forbidden more, I also liked Kat more in that book than this one. Don't get me wrong, I still loved her, but she definitely has her weak, conflicted moments. I could understand where she was coming from though, even if I didn't totally agree with her and she honesty didn't annoy me. Kat does find her strength and I look forward to watching who she becomes in Climax

I didn't know it was possible, but I fell even more in love with Tristan! He's so determined to have Kat and you can't doubt how he feels about her. He's his normal dominant self, but we get to see a softer, more vulnerable side to him as well. I loved that and his dominance, his thoughtfulness, and I just loved Tristan!

Seduction might be a short, fast read, but that doesn't mean that it won't make your heart ache - because it will. It will frustrate you and make you feel powerless at times and it will make you desperate to see everything work out for Kat and Tristan. It's hard to watch Tristan and Kat struggle to figure out what's right and it's not an easy book on your heart, but there's always a hope that they will be able to work it out and get their happily-ever-after in the end. Seduction might not have been my favorite book in this serial but I can't deny that it made me feel, both the bad and the good.

Seduction is the second part in Her British Stepbrother serial, it's told in Tristan and Kat's POV, and it does end leaving you needing more!

Synopsis:

You know me.

Come on, you know you do.

Maybe you pretend you don’t. Maybe you clear your browser history religiously. Maybe you pretend to be aghast whenever someone even mentions the word porn in your presence.

But the truth is that you do know me.

Everybody knows Logan O’Toole, world famous porn star.

Except then Devi Dare pops into my world, and pretty soon I’m doing things that aren’t like me—like texting her with flirty banter and creating an entire web porn series just so I can get to star in her bed. Again. And again.

With Devi, my entire universe shifts, and the more time I spend with her, the more I realize that Logan O’Toole isn’t the guy I thought he was.

So maybe I'm not the guy you thought I was either.

Excerpt:

I spin around and throw my phone as hard as I can into the pool.
It lands with a small splash, sinking like a brushed-aluminum stone straight to the bottom. My momentary satisfaction is eclipsed by immense regret, because I just got that phone a few weeks ago. Fuck it, I can get a new one tomorrow. If that’s the price I have to pay to keep myself separate from Raven, then so be it.
I take a few healthy chugs of the Laphroaig.
“I hope you’ve got a good warranty,” a cheerful voice says from next to me. Even over the smoky scent of the whisky, I smell her. Cinnamon and sunshine.
I inelegantly swallow the Scotch still in my mouth, turning to face the person next to me. “Devi.”
She flashes me her sunny grin, and then returns the greeting by playfully bumping her shoulder against my arm. Heat flares across my bicep, emanating from the place where our bare skin touched, and the heat slowly migrates towards my chest, independent of the blood now pumping to my groin.
I am suddenly very aware of the fact that Devi and I have never been alone. Strange, given that we’ve given each other orgasms, but Raven’s Real Playdates was the only time we’ve worked together, and there are so many people on a porn set that it’s impossible to feel any sense of alone-ness, even when you’re staring them in the eyes while they suck you off. And even though we’ve seen each other at parties and events since then, we’ve only ever said hi or how are you or where’s the drinks? Not exactly the basis for a deep understanding of one another.
So I should probably explain why I just chucked a brand new phone into the water, and also maybe not reveal the fact that I have a massive crush on her.
I try to muster the casual, flirty guy I was earlier tonight. “Devi, I…”
I jack off to you almost every day.
“…I, uh, didn’t know anyone else was out here. Or I wouldn’t have, you know.” I mime throwing the phone.
She laughs and then bends down to unfasten her leather heel. “If it’s in a good case, it might still be okay,” she says. I watch, transfixed, as she kicks off both shoes, shimmies out of her shorts, and then walks to the edge of the pool. She’s wearing what legally might qualify as underwear, but only just barely.
Have I mentioned Devi Dare’s ass? Because I should. She has one of the best asses known to mankind. Plump and thick and juicy, the kind of ass that invites biting and squeezing, and the way it slopes out from her small waist is pure poetry. And those legs—despite the obvious muscles in her calves and thighs, they still move as she walks, like her ass does, and there’s something so healthy about it, so tantalizing about her body with its wide hips and slightly soft stomach and full breasts. She’s sexy in such a visceral, biological way, the kind of way that says you want to make babies with me. My cock lengthens as I watch her, tens of thousands of years of evolution telling me to haul her off and impregnate her.
She turns, hands on her hips. “Are you going to join me?”
“I was just enjoying the view,” I say, and it comes out a little too raspy, a little too honest, but then I follow it up with a weak grin and then she laughs and jumps into the pool. With a final gulp of whisky, I put the cork in the bottle and then fling myself in after her, clothes, shoes and all.
The water is cool and it’s the best kind of contrast to the dry heat of the night and the warmth of the Scotch in my stomach, and the new kind of warmth that’s agitating in my chest, something frictive and thrilling and pressing up against my anger and my broken heart. Something that started the moment Devi brushed up against my arm.
I jumped into the deep end, and so it’s a few beats before my feet press flat against the bottom and I can push myself back up. I break the surface, sputtering, and awkwardly try to swim over to Devi with one hand still clenched around my Scotch bottle. She treads water as steadily and gracefully as a water nymph, her long hair floating around her shoulders and her gold top drifting away from her skin, giving me just the barest glimpse of one nipple, dark rose and peaked into a tight furl. Water droplets cling to the thick fringe of her eyelashes.
“You’re not very good at swimming,” she points out as I make my way closer.
“Never liked it much,” I say, swimming past her and moving to where my feet can touch. With a sigh of relief, I set my feet down, examine the Scotch bottle to make sure no pool water leaked in, and then I take a long drink. I’m on my way to being drunk, but I’m intent on sealing the deal. What can I say? I’m a finisher.
Devi drifts up next to me, holding something in her hand. It takes me a minute to realize that it’s my phone, the entire reason we spontaneously jumped into the pool in the first place. And somehow, miraculously, the pricey case the Apple Store girl talked me into buying has saved the phone. The screen still glows with my unwritten text message.
Somehow, between the pool and the Scotch and Devi Dare with no pants on, I’ve lost the urge to talk to Raven. I take the phone and toss it carelessly onto the concrete and then turn back to Devi.
You, on the other hand, seem like quite the swimmer,” I say with a smile, offering her the Scotch. She takes it and raises the bottle to her lips.
“I was raised in California, you know,” she says and then takes a drink.
“Well, so was I. But my parents are Boston transplants, so I guess they never saw swimming as a priority for me.”
She hands the bottle back to me. “I think I had floaties before I had a bicycle. My parents are very, uh…” She searches for the right words. “Natural people. They think it’s important to be periodically cleansed of negative energy, and flowing water is one of the best ways to do that. So we went swimming at least once a week.”
I can see the faintest blush coloring the apples of her cheeks, as if she’s embarrassed of what her parents believe. And then I wonder if she’s embarrassed because she believes it a little too.
God, that blush is so sexy. I want to lick it right off her face. And then pin her down and lick her everywhere.
She tilts her head to the sky. “You can see Cassiopeia tonight.”
I look up, following her gaze, but I see nothing other than the golden glow hovering above the city and a smattering of faint, twinkling stars. “Is Cassiopeia a constellation?” I venture.
She laughs and nods, and then she reaches over and takes my head in her hands. My pulse thrums, that warmth in my chest explodes into flames, and I want her to kiss me kiss me kiss me, but before I can turn my head to her, she trains my face to the sky, facing the right direction this time.
“Do you see it?” she asks. Her mouth is close to my neck, and I wonder what it would feel like if she bit me there. “It looks like a letter M.” She traces the shape of it with her fingers, until finally I see it--an underwhelming handful of tired stars.
“You can’t see it this far into the city sometimes,” she continues.
“Cassiopeia sounds like a porn name,” I say frankly and she laughs again.
“Ptolemy named it.”
I give her a blank look. I got pretty good grades in school, but it’s been more than ten years since graduation, and anything not intimately related to film or the kind of math I need to run my business has been filtered out of my brain.
“Ptolemy was a Greek astronomer,” she explains, giving me an amused glance. “He named it after a famous queen in Greek mythology. She was so beautiful and vain and boastful that she brought the wrath of Poseidon down on her kingdom.”
Beautiful, vain, boastful. My mind swerves back to Raven, possibly still in this very house, possibly still being screwed with that evil smile on her face. Where is Poseidon when you need him?
No.
No, I won’t let Raven crowd into my happy, drunk moment with Devi and the Scotch. I speak as much to drive away thoughts of my ex as to comment on Devi’s astronomy knowledge. “You know a lot about this shit,” I tell her, turning my eyes back to her face completely.
And now she really blushes. “I really like astronomy. Stars and galaxies and stuff. It makes life feel so...big...you know?”
The thing is, I do know. That big feeling, I mean. I get it every time I watch an amazing film, every time I imagine my own films with just the right setting and just the right cinematography and just the right score.
“I’ve never met a performer who’s told me anything like that,” I say. And it’s true. Not once have I been around another adult film star and had them confess a purely impractical fascination. A call toward something that makes them feel like life is magical.
She blinks, and the way her long, thick eyelashes brush against her wet cheeks is arresting. “Really?”
“Really. Devi Dare, I do believe you are my first.”
