REVIEW TOUR: Cipher by Larissa Ione

In the war between good and evil, sometimes the biggest battles take place inside the soul…and the heart.

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Larissa Ione, comes CIPHER, a passionate and spellbinding novella from the Demonica Underworld Series, brought to you by 1,001 Dark Nights! Be sure you grab your copy today!

About CIPHER:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Larissa Ione comes a new story in her Demonica Underworld series…

It’s been seven months since Cipher, an Unfallen angel who straddled a razor thin line between good and evil, woke up in hell with a new set of wings, a wicked pair of fangs, and a handler who’s as beautiful as she is dangerous. As a laid-back cyber-specialist who once assisted guardian angels, he’d been in a prime position to earn back his halo. But now, as a True Fallen forced to use his talents for malevolence, he must fight not only his captors and his sexy handler, but the growing corruption inside him…before the friends searching for him become his enemies and he becomes his own worst nightmare.

Lyre is a fallen angel with a heart full of hate. When she’s assigned to ensure that Cipher carries out their boss’s orders, she sees an opportunity to take revenge on those who wronged her. All she has to do is appeal to Cipher’s burgeoning dark side. But the devastatingly handsome fellow True Fallen has other ideas — sexy ideas that threaten to derail all Lyre’s plans and put them in the path of an approaching hell storm.

Danger and desire explode, even as Cipher and Lyre unravel a sinister plot that will fracture the underworld and send shockwaves into Heaven itself…

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do. **

“Ione has made a major name for herself with her amazing Demonica series.” ~ Romantic Times Book Reviews

Sonja's Review

Ever since I first read Revenant, and yes, I know I’m terrible for reading out of order, but what’s done is done and I have no regrets because I absolutely love all things Demonica and as soon as I know a book is by Larissa Ione, I snatch that baby up with no questions, no hesitations, and no doubts. So you can bet that I’ve been following along with her Demonica Underworld series and I swear each new book is better than the last and Cipher is no different. Hawkyn left me wanting the next book immediately and man, oh man, did Cipher deliver! It was oh, soooo good and oh my gosh, I am chomping at the bit for October to get here, so I can read Reaper — I cannot even adequately express to you the depth of my excitement, but it is a lot, like a lot, A LOT!

Okay, I’m going to come down a bit from that and actually talk about Cipher now. I went into totally blind and I didn’t have any expectations for it really other than it’s a Larissa Ione book so I figured it would be excellent and it was even better than I was hoping for! It was full of action, excitement, and energy. I could not stop turning the pages, I had to know what was going to happen next, and I just loved every second of Cipher! I loved seeing Cipher and his heroine, Lyre, and I especially loved seeing Azagoth and Lilliana, but one of the things that I loved the most was the way Ms. Ione was setting up this book for Reaper. She’s been gradually maneuvering the Demonica Underworld to lead up to all of this and I am just so ready to see what happens next — bring on Reaper!

Excerpt

Lilliana inhaled a shaky breath as she stood on the portal pad inside Sheoul-gra, the symbols engraved into the stone glowing hotly. A breeze swirled around her, rattling the leaves on the perpetually blooming citrus trees and bringing their tangy and sweet scents to her nose. Grassy lawns stretched for acres, broken by babbling streams and worn paths — and the occasional ancient Greek column or demonic statue that rose into the featureless gray sky.
Several yards away, a fountain that once ran with blood splashed crystal water onto pavers leading to outbuildings that housed dozens of Unfallen angels and Memitim. And beyond the fountain, Azagoth’s palace towered over all, its pale walls gleaming.
Relief sifted through her, temporarily replacing her nervousness. The realm was attuned to Azagoth’s moods, and she wasn’t sure what she’d have done if she’d come back to find the kind of decay and evil that had once held court here.
The Grim Reaper’s realm could be beautiful but disconcerting; look, but not too closely, touch, but don’t feel.
Her gut turned over, and inside her rounded belly, the baby stirred as if sensing the return of her anxiety.
Except that anxiety was too mellow a word for what she was experiencing. Really, she was flat-out terrified, mere moments away from seeing her husband for the first time in months. For the first time since she’d left him.
And he didn’t have a clue that she was pregnant.
She almost regretted telling Reaver that she didn’t need him to accompany her down here when he’d flashed her from Ares’s Greek island to the outer portal. She should have at least allowed Maleficent, a hellhound that had shadowed her everywhere on the island, to come with her. The hound had refused to leave her side until Cara distracted the beast long enough for Lilliana to get away. She was going to miss the moose-sized canine, but Cara assured her that Mal would find her if the hellhound had bonded with her.
Lilliana was going to have a hard enough time trying to explain bringing home a baby, let alone a pet that ate people.
Resting her palm on her baby bump, she stepped off the landing pad and started toward the palace, her heart pounding wildly. Azagoth would have sensed her presence by now.
Before that thought even faded, the skin on the back of her neck tingled, and she stopped in her tracks.
He was here.
He was behind her.
She should turn around and face him. But damn, she wasn’t ready for this.
Closing her eyes, she let out a long, ragged breath, and when she spoke, she could only manage a whisper. “Azagoth.”

Lia's Review

The blurb and gorgeous cover for When We Fall caught my attention and I was excited to read it. However that was the best part of this book.

I had a very hard time staying engaged with the story. The writing was a bit choppy and juvenile and I struggled to even finish it after abandoning it multiple times.
I really wanted to like this book, the premise was great, but the writing style just didn't do it for me.

I did end up finishing it, it just wasn't for me though. I really wanted to love it but it missed the mark.

Lia’s Review

This book was absolutely stunning. I've never read a bad book by Colleen Hoover and I don't suppose I ever will. I got absolutely nothing accomplished because I just couldn't put this down. I ugly cried, I laughed and I swooned. And if I could rate this more than five stars I totally would. Perfection.

SPACE_T02.jpg

Excerpt:

“Hi—hello,” she said, stepping forward but not out of the way, drawing my attention. She was still staring at me, her face still pale, but her eyes had turned searching instead of stunned.

“I—” She stopped herself, swallowing, her gaze dropping to the front of my coat, a cute little frown furrowing her eyebrows. In the next moment, she was pulling off the glove of her right hand. Abruptly, she shoved the ungloved fingers toward me, returning her eyes to mine. “I’m Mona.”

I suppressed my disbelief at her small action before it could break my outward mask of calm. I wasn’t calm. Just to be clear, I was the opposite of calm.

The fact that she was introducing herself to me now meant that she thought I was too stupid to figure out her lies over the last two-and-a-half-fucking years. She was arguably one of the smartest people in the world, after all. To her, people like me must seem like housebroken pets. So it shouldn’t have surprised me. But it did. The tension and tightness around my ribs reappeared, squeezing uncomfortably.

Dropping my attention to her bare hand, I pressed my lips into a tighter line, dismissing the way my pulse jumped at the sight of her wrist, the olive tone of her skin under the yellow string lights overhead. Glaring at her outstretched offering, I considered telling her to go to hell.

I considered it, but I wouldn’t.

I didn’t trust myself to speak, that was reason number one.

The other reason was harder to explain, or use as a justification, or admit to myself. Staring at her hand, I braced against a sudden flare of hunger. She might consider me a lower life-form, but that didn’t change the fact that I wanted to touch her. I wanted to touch her more than I wanted to tell her to go to hell, and that was fucking pitiful.

But there it was.

Acting on the compulsion, I lifted my right hand and tugged off the ski glove, sliding my warm palm against her much colder one. Her hand felt good in my hand, the right weight, the right size, the right texture, and I inhaled freezing air.

Mona also seemed to suck in a slow but expansive breath as our hands touched, held. This brought my eyes back to hers in time to see her lashes flutter. Pink colored her previously pale cheeks. The sound of the wailing wind, the sting of the air and frost momentarily melted away, leaving just her, her soft skin warming against mine, her beautiful face filling my vision.

So beautiful.

She really was. She was stunning. I hated that she was still so beautiful to me.

Lia's Review

The first book in this series was a tad lukewarm for me, I just didn’t love it. Well after reading Space, let me tell you, my thoughts have changed, for the better.

This installment of the series was straight up addictive. I flipped through the pages in record time and then BAM! Another cliffhanger. Holy frijole, I am so stoked to finish this series now. Hurry the hell up part 3! I’m on pins and needles here.

Mona and Abram are killing me.

Excerpt:
“It’s in your best interest to comply,” I say calmly.
Her nostrils flare and her eyes become watery.  “I don’t want to go back to sleep.”  She bites down on one of her swollen pink lips.  “If you don’t plan on letting me go home, can’t you just let me hang out with you?”
I blink at her, confused by her words, momentarily stunned by her vulnerability.  After a second, I shake my nog to clear it.  “No.”
She holds out both of her tiny palms as if she has the power to stop my massive frame.  Small and delicate.  Shaky.  A bluish tint shades her slender fingers.  Her teeth begin to clack together and I cock my nog to the side, curious at the sounds she’s making.  When the sounds become louder, I worry she’s about to strike.
I straighten my spine, letting my sub-bones crack and pop as I rise to my full height.  My ears flatten against my nog and I bare my double fangs at her.  Whatever battle move she’s about to unleash, I’ll be ready.  I’ve taken on sabrevipes with my bare hands.  I can take down this miniature alien.
But instead of attacking me, she cowers, a terrified sob escaping her.
I frown at her, breaking my battle stance.  “I can see you’re afraid,” I start, choosing my words carefully.  She reminds me of so many of our people…from before.  When they were all screaming and begging for their lives as The Rades wiped them out one by one.  I squeeze my eyes shut, overwhelmed by the reminder.
Slap! Slap! Slap!
I blink my eyes open just in time to see her attempting to dart past me, her bare feet slapping the tile.
Lightning quick, I strike out and tangle my fist in her hair before she can get too far.  A bone-rattling scream rips from her tiny body.  She wiggles and squirms.  Her claws, softer and more brittle than mine, rake across my cheek as she tries to free herself.  She doesn’t break the surface but the sting remains.  I grab her by her tiny arms and push her against the nearest door.  Draven’s wild eyes watch the show from beyond the glass.  When I glower at him, he disappears from my sight.
“Halt,” I order, my chest heaving from exertion.
Her throat bobs as she swallows.  “Just kill me,” she says, her voice wobbling.  “I’d rather be dead than be trapped in some coffin.”
I cock my nog to the side and study her lips.  Once, Jareth ate a new species of flatshrooms Galen discovered and had a violent reaction.  His lips swelled up like this untamed one’s.  But his were never so intriguing.  We jested at his expense until Avrell administered a treatment to heal him.
But these lips?
These are a visual snare, and I am caught.
She licks them.
Heat, fast like the flash of a magnastrike in a geostorm, strikes my lower belly.  Like ultraviolet poisoning entering my bloodstream when I’ve spent one too many solars stealing extra seconds in the sun, it awakens my nerves as it travels to my cock.  So many times I’ve stroked myself to release just to find a tiny inkling of pleasure in my bleak world.  So many times.
And now, dark, forbidden thoughts of pleasuring myself in other ways begin to take root inside my mind.
As if sensing my physiological reaction to her, Aria licks her lips again.  Her lids grow heavy and she gives me a sweet smile.  A smile I want to taste.
A low rumbling builds in my throat.
Possessive and animalistic.
Mine.

Sonja's Review

I’ve been wondering when Ms. Webster would write an alien book because of her well-known love for them, so when she announced that she had finally written one with Ms. Blanchard, I couldn’t wait to read it! I had high expectations for The Forgotten Commander, so much so that I’ll admit that I let my nerves about the book not living up to those along with the words a friend who hadn’t completely loved the book, stall me from reading as soon as I was able to. All of that worry though, was unnecessary because I loved this book not long after starting it and my love for it only grew the longer I read. I shouldn’t have doubted these authors because The Forgotten Commander was truly better than I was expecting — it was so, so excellent!

I know that Ms. Webster and Ms. Blanchard spent a lot of time planning The Forgotten Commander and it shows! The world they created has so much life and flesh to it, I didn’t think there was any area that was lacking depth or clarity. Everything had a purpose and a place and I loved the world of these morts as much as the morts themselves. I had an awesome time getting to know all of the characters and the hero and heroine that we have in Breccan and Aria are just both strong, fierce, passionate people. They’re an adorable couple, I wholeheartedly loved them, especially Breccan’s sweetness. I really rekking loved this book and I absolutely cannot rekking wait for the next one!

Lia's Review

When I finished this book, my first thought was, I NEED MORE HOCKEY ROMANCES IN MY LIFE!! I really, really enjoyed this book. Avery Flynn is a new-to-me author, I'm so glad I decided to read this one.

Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite tropes, mix in a jock and I'm so there! While third person writing isn't my favorite, this book was so well written, I barely noticed and it definitely didn't slow down my reading at all.

Avery Flynn is one helluva storyteller, I'll definitely be buying more of her books. And while Tomboy is part of a series, it can definitely standalone. I loved it.

~ 4.5 Stars

About Avery Flynn:
USA Today bestselling romance author Avery Flynn has three slightly-wild children, loves a hockey-addicted husband and is desperately hoping someone invents the coffee IV drip. She fell in love with romance while reading Johanna Lindsey’s Mallory books. It wasn’t long before Avery had read through all the romance offerings at her local library. Needing a romance fix, she turned to Harlequin’s four books a month home delivery service to ease the withdrawal symptoms. That worked for a short time, but it wasn’t long before the local book stores’ staffs knew her by name. Avery was a reader before she was a writer and hopes to always be both. She loves to write about smartass alpha heroes who are as good with a quip as they are with their *ahem* other God-given talents. Her heroines are feisty, fierce and fantastic. Brainy and brave, these ladies know how to stand on their own two feet and knock the bad guys off theirs.
