RELEASE BLITZ REVIEW: The Fallen: Genesis by Tillie Cole

The Fallen: Genesis is a prequel novella in The Deadly Virtues Series and MUST be read before RAPHAEL (DV: book one).

*****

THE FALLEN: GENESIS

(A Deadly Virtues Prequel)

IN THE BEGINNING...

They told them they were evil.

They told them they were possessed by demons.

They told them that darkness ran in their veins.

Holy Innocents Home for Children is a haven for orphaned boys who have nothing and no one. The priests watch over them, educate them, raise them in the family of the church.

Except for some.

Seven of the orphans are no ordinary boys. They attract the attention of the priests for their acts of violence, of bloodlust. The priests realize these boys are drawn to the darkness.

And the priests are no ordinary priests. They are the Brethren, a secret sect who believe themselves on a divine mission to seek out evil in the boys in their care. Seek it out, and then drive it out.

The seven have fallen from God’s grace. And the Brethren will cleanse their blackened souls…

Dark Contemporary Romance novella. Contains sexual situations, violence, sensitive and taboo subjects, offensive language and topics some may find triggering. Recommended for age 18 years and up.

Sonja's Review

It’s been awhile since I’ve read Tillie Cole, but when I saw little teases of her upcoming series, Deadly Virtues, I was really intrigued by it. It wasn’t what I was expecting because for some reason from the look and the synopsis of The Fallen: Genesis, I was thinking the series would be dystopian paranormal — uh, it’s not — but that didn’t bother me because I absolutely loved this prequel! I can’t think of a lot of prequels that I’ve read in my day, but this was without the best one I’ve ever read, it was an excellent introduction to the series and I cannot wait to read more!

The Fallen: Genesis captivated me and if I could have, I would have read this in one sitting — I did not want to put it down until I finished. It was just a short book, but there was such depth to the world, you could really tell that Ms. Cole put so much planning into the series and it really blew my mind a little. It was dark and heartbreaking, it brought tears to my eyes and just made me feel, and I really hope all of the men, including Gabriel, find their peace in whatever way they need. The Fallen: Genesis was so, so good — I NEED MORE!

Joseph watched helplessly as James moved from his place against the far wall toward a boy on a chair on the opposite side of the room. A boy who had slim knives embedded in his arms and legs—a human pin cushion.

Joseph shivered as he recalled his brother’s expression a moment ago as he’d sat and stared at the knives he had sliced into the boy’s flesh. James, the sadistic voyeur of his own work. Joseph’s nervous eyes landed on his brother’s target. The boy was bound with ropes, and a washcloth was stuffed into his mouth, silencing his cries.

Luke.

Fear flooded Joseph’s body. Luke, the boy who had been intent on bullying James since the age of eight. The boy who would spit at James’s feet when they walked by. The boy who call him weird, a goth, a psychopath who rarely spoke. His taunts were endless. Joseph didn’t think the verbal bullets had ever hit their target . . . until he’d found a pad of paper hidden underneath James’s bed. A pad of paper showing in graphic detail what James wanted to do to Luke.

Tie him up.

Cut his flesh.

Exsanguinate his body.

Then drink the blood down.

“They’re just fantasy, right?” Joseph asked James when he returned from detention. Joseph held up the drawings. Page after page of pain and despair and cruelty.

James walked slowly to Joseph and ran his hand down the open page of the pad, delicately running his fingertip over the pencil image of Luke’s slit throat. “It’s a promise,” James said, with no shame in his voice. “Each page is what will happen to Luke.” James finally met his older brother’s eyes. “I’m just waiting for the perfect time.”

From that day on Joseph made sure Luke never got too close to James, for fear of what his younger brother would do. Because Joseph believed every word his brother had said.

The truth was, Joseph knew that someday, if he wasn’t stopped, James would do something so terrible he wouldn’t be able to come back from it.

And Joseph had no idea how to cure James. He didn’t know how to heal his little brother of the wretchedness that had lodged itself into his soul. He prayed for a miracle he knew would never come.

Joseph’s heart pounded as James held up another knife. His brother’s torso was bare, the scars from his frequent self-mutilation clear to see, white roads of flesh mapping the veins that ran under his skin. Veins that carried the blood James so desperately craved; nightly, once safe in their room, he would slice them open and lick the falling drops as they ran in crimson rivulets down his arms.

Joseph thrashed on the bed, fighting the binds James must have placed him in while he slept. “James, listen to me,” Joseph said as he helplessly watched his brother slowly push his blade into Luke’s shoulder. Luke’s chair almost fell as he screamed into the washcloth, the fabric absorbing his cry. But James didn’t even flinch. Joseph’s stomach clenched when the blood started to pour from Luke’s shoulder as James carefully extracted the blade.

Eleven. That’s all James was. Eleven years old, yet thought only of blood . . . worse, even . . . thought only about the consumption of blood.

Sonja’s Review

I can’t tell you how excited I was when I found out that Meg Cabot was releasing not one, but two adult romances this year! I couldn’t wait to read them and now that I’ve read Bridal Boot Camp, I’m even more stoked to read No Judgments! I didn’t realize until I opened up Bridal Boot Camp that it was a novella, but the short length didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the story at all. It was funny, sweet, light, and put a goofy, happy smile on my face and just made me feel all warm and gooey inside. I think Bridal Boot Camp was a great prequel to lead us into the Little Bridge Island series and I am so looking forward to visiting the island again!

Sonja’s Review

I’ve really been looking forward to reading Beverly Jenkins again ever since her Tempest and Rebel has only made me an even bigger fan and more eager than ever to get started on her backlist! Rebel is the first book in the Women Who Dare series and it was a fabulous introduction to kick it off. I completely loved it, it provoked so many strong emotions in me and I absolutely cannot wait to see what else Ms. Jenkins has in store for us with this new series!

First of all, we have to talk about how amazing Drake and Valinda were. Drake was the sweetest, most genuine man ever. He was totally pure of heart, very generous, and just an honorable, good man. Have no fear though, because he definitely has a mischievous, playful side to him that was icing on the cake. And man, oh man, was Valinda a true force to be reckoned with. She’s strong, stubborn, and so determined to be independent and get what she wants out of life. She’s kind, very quick on her feet, and can come up with a comeback like nobody’s business. Drake and Val were seriously the best and I wholeheartedly loved them!

Rebel really made me feel everything from rage, heartbreak, and helplessness to amusement, warmth, and happiness. It was difficult to read at times, but for all the serious situations in this book that were infuriating and upsetting, there was a lot of light and sweetness to it too. it had its epic, hand clapping moments where I literally had to put the book down, so I could clap and give characters their props and there were other times that just made me grin like a loon — I enjoyed reading Rebel so much, it was beyond wonderful!

REVIEW TOUR: Twisted by Aleatha Romig

The underworld of Chicago is far from forgiving. It’s a world where knowledge means power, power money, and money everything.
While I paid the ultimate price to have it all, it wasn’t my decision to give up my life.
That doesn’t mean I ceased to exist, only to live.
Going where the job takes me and living in the shadows, with deadly accuracy I utilize the skills inherent to me, not knowing from where they came, not recalling what I’d lost.
And then I saw her.
Laurel Carlson.
I shouldn’t want her, desire her, or need her, yet with each sighting I know she is exactly what I have to have. Laurel has the ability to do what I thought was impossible. She sees what others don’t.
My gut tells me that it’s a deadly mistake to change my plans and open my world to her. My mind says she’ll be repulsed by my twisted existence.
None of that matters, because my body won’t take no for an answer.
I’ve made dangerous mistakes before.
This time, will the price be too high?

From New York Times bestselling author Aleatha Romig comes a brand-new dark romance bringing us back to the same dangerous underworld as SECRETS. You do not need to read the Web of Sin trilogy to get caught in this new and intriguing saga, Tangled Web.

TWISTED is book one of the TANGLED WEB trilogy which will continue in OBSESSED and conclude in BOUND.

Sonja's Review

I’ve read Aleatha Romig before and while I really enjoyed Insidious, I haven’t picked her up again because I’m just weird like that. So what made me pick up Twisted you ask? It was peer pressure, pure and simple. I’d seen how a couple of people were really excited for it, so I decided, “What the hey, why not?” and I’m so glad that I did because I loved Twisted from the very beginning all the way to the end! It was fascinating, intriguing, and I really loved and enjoyed reading Twisted and I am so, so excited to read the next two books in the trilogy.

I don’t know what else to say about Twisted other than it was very interesting, complex, and thrilling in a thrillery-type way. I couldn’t help but keep turning the pages as soon as I finished one because I needed to see what was going to happen next. I can’t wait to see where we’re going to be taken next or for everything to all be revealed eventually!

BLOG TOUR REVIEW: Boss by W.S. Greer

Title: Boss
Author: WS Greer
Genre: Mafia Romance Suspense
Release Date: May 7, 2019 Cover Designer: Robin Harper Cover Model: Elton Pinto Mota Photographer: Alex Wightman Photography

I was never supposed to be anything special. Born and raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn, I was supposed to know my place, and grow up to be absolutely nothing. But what they never knew was that I’ve always been special, just not in the way the world defines the word.
I’m special because I’m more ambitious than them. I’m smarter, and much more violent. When you add it all up, you get a man who’s capable of creating something out of nothing… a brand new mafia family right in the heart of New York. They have no idea what I’m willing to do, or how far I’m willing to go to make my family unstoppable.
I don’t care which Italian mob family thinks they run this city. Their rules don’t apply to me. Tell me I can’t take over this borough, I’ll take it. Tell me I can’t overpower the mafia, I’ll crush them. Tell me I can’t touch a mob boss’s daughter, and I’m gonna touch her up-and-down with my hands and tongue, until she screams she belongs to me loud enough for her to father hear, and then the two of us are going to bring the entire structure of things crashing down around our enemies. She’ll be my Bonnie, and I’ll be the baddest Clyde the world has ever seen.
They say we’re angry for how we’ve been treated. Well, she and I are smart enough to know that if you get angry enough, and you harness your emotions just right, you get two things: passionate love, and a wildfire hot enough to burn down everything that ever held you back. This time, two wrongs will make it right.
~ International bestselling author WS Greer is at his all-time best in this long-awaited mafia romantic suspense standalone. BOSS is action-packed, scorching hot, and will have you out of breath as you struggle to turn the pages fast enough. ~

Sonja's Review

I saw a teaser for Boss and the cover and I pretty much decided right then and there that I wanted to read it. I didn’t really pay attention to the synopsis and while that has backfired for me a time or two before, this was definitely not one of those instances. I did have those new-author-jitters because I’ve been in one of my finicky moods and I was a bit worried that that would affect they way I read Boss, but all of my nerves were for nothing because I absolutely loved Boss! It was totally dope and I had an awesome time reading it!

This was my first time reading W.S. Greer and I can assure you that it will not be the last! He really has a knack for writing in a way that pulls your emotions out and doesn’t allow you to be passive while reading what is going on with the characters. Amari and Gianna’s story made me eyes water, made me furious, and even gave me the chills at one point. I was completely invested in their story and witnessing them succeed and get rewarded with everything they deserve. I love both Amari and Gianna so much for their strength, ambition, and their determination to take the world on and especially for them just being themselves with no qualms or cares for what anyone else thought.

Boss was powerful, motivating, and moving. I loved how Amari and Gianna stood on their own as complete separate characters who each had their own goals they wanted to accomplish and how they only became stronger together and totally unstoppable. Boss had action, heart, romance, and spirit — it was one wild ride and I’m so glad I was there for it!

REVIEW TOUR: Eli's Triumph by Joanna Wylde

From New York Times Bestselling author Joanna Wylde comes ELI’S TRIUMPH, a new novella in her Reapers MC series, brought to you by 1,001 Dark Nights! Be sure to grab your copy today!

About ELI’S TRIUMPH:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Joanna Wylde comes a new story in her Reapers MC series…

Peaches Taylor spent the last seven years slinging drinks and dodging drunks at the Starkwood Saloon. Some might call it a dead end job, but to her it was an investment—another six months, and she’d have enough money to buy the place.

Life would've been perfect if Eli hadn’t come home.

Eli King is ready to settle down. He stood by his brothers when they needed him, paying the price for their freedom with his own. Now it’s time to claim his reward—the Starkwood Saloon. He’s got the cash to buy the bar, the skills to run it, and just one person standing between him and his dream: Peaches Taylor.

She’s been driving him crazy since they were kids, and not in the good way. When she was six, she shoved a spider down his pants. When he was ten, he locked her in a closet overnight. Then she hot-wired his car at seventeen, and things got ugly…

They’re adults now, and the Starkwood isn’t a toy to fight over—it’s the hill they’ll die on. No prisoners. No compromises. No mercy.

Peaches Taylor and Eli King are going to war.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

Excerpt:

“Kinda desperate, coming here on your night off,” Eli said as I walked up to the bar. “Usually, girls just text me when they want a booty call.” His lips quirked up in a smirk.
“Go to hell,” I replied absently. Where was Gus? The place was mostly empty, just a few of the Reapers hanging out in one of the corner booths. Megan was wiping down tables, and Eli was the only one behind the bar. I frowned, boosting myself up onto one of the bar stools. “Oh, and can I have a rum and Coke?”
Eli leaned forward on his elbows. “Too late. I already did last call for the night.”
“It’s hardly past eleven,” I said, surprised.
“Slow night.” He shrugged. “Decided to close early.”
“I’ve been trying to convince Gus that we should close earlier when it’s like this for the last three years.”
Eli’s mouth quirked up, radiating smugness.
“Gus isn’t in charge anymore.”
My stomach dropped. “Does that mean you signed the papers today? I thought they weren’t ready yet.”
Eli raised an eyebrow, but he didn’t give me a direct answer. Instead, he grabbed a couple of shot glasses and set them out between us. Then he grabbed a bottle of Crown Royal from the shelf behind the bar.
“Eli, did you sign the papers?” I asked again, feeling nervous. He filled the shot glasses. This was starting to look like a celebration, which didn’t make sense.
They weren’t supposed to finalize things until next week.
“Got them today,” he said, and I heard the triumph in his voice. That fucking bastard… It wasn’t enough for him to take the bar from me. Nope. Now, he wanted me to celebrate with him. This was about him winning. Again. “Already looked everything over. We’ll sign them tomorrow morning at the title company. Grab your drink, Peaches. It’s time for us to make a new start.”
Eli caught my eye, raising his glass in a toast.
I briefly considered throwing the shot in his face because I’d be damned if I would concede defeat. If the papers hadn’t been signed yet, I still had a chance to make my offer. Eli didn’t need to know that, though. So, I gave him a strained smile and forced myself to give his glass a token tap. Together, we downed the shots.
He reached for the bottle and started pouring again.
“Are you trying to get me drunk?” I asked, wondering if he had a deeper game. “Because I stole bottles of this shit all the time in high school. It’ll take more than two shots.”
“Not true,” he said. “You always went for the crappy vodka. Easier to water down. Cover the crime.”
He had me. I’d totally done that.

Sonja’s Review

I went on a bit of reading break last week and when I was thinking about reading Eli’s Triumph because it was time for me to pick it up, I wasn’t that excited, not because I thought it would be bad or anything like that, I just wasn’t really in the mood for it. I love and trust Joanna Wylde though, and when I remembered that it was going to be an enemies-to-lovers type romance from skimming the synopsis, I got more enthused and after I actually started reading, I really got a big kick out of Eli’s Triumph and I was loving it so hard! In fact, I loved it all the way through, Eli’s Triumph was seriously fantastic and I enjoyed it so much!

Eli’s Triumph was beyond entertaining to read, it made me laugh, do that “ooooooh” gasp, and cover my mouth — I just had a genuinely good time with these characters that we have in Eli and Peaches. Their banter was amusing and the heat and tension between them was soooo hot! Of course, I loved their fighting, but I really loved how they had such a strong bond of trust, respect, and friendship, even if it’s somewhat buried underneath the surface. Eli’s Triumph was another winner in this series and I can’t wait for the next couple — whoever they may be!
