RELEASE DAY REVIEW: Well, Actually by Mazey Eddings

Title: Well, Actually
Author: Mazey Eddings
Publisher: St. Martin’s Griffin
Publication Date: August 5, 2025

Synopsis:

An utterly delightful and sexy second-chance romance between a black cat and golden retriever with Mazey Edding's signature sparkling voice!

Eva Kitt never expected to be the host of Sausage Talk, interviewing B-list celebrities over lukewarm hot dogs, instead of pursuing the journalism career she dreamed of. But when Eva’s impromptu public call out of her college ex goes viral, she’s thrust into the spotlight. It doesn’t help said ex is Rylie Cooper, a beloved social media personality that has built a platform on deconstructing toxic masculinity and teaching men how to be good partners.

Forced to confront Rylie on a live episode of Sausage Talk, he offers Eva a deal: allow him to take her on a series of dates to make up for his toxic behavior, then debrief them on his channel to show he’s changed. Eva refuses to play nice, but agrees to the scheme to advance her own career and continue defaming Rylie’s good name. When these manufactured dates start to feel real, Eva has to wonder if the boy that broke her heart has become the man that might heal it.

Sonja’s Review:

I found Mazey Eddings before her debut novel, A Brush with Love, had come out as there was a lot of buzz for it and it interested me, so I added it to my TBR. I haven’t read it yet, but it still put Ms. Eddings on my radar and when Well, Actually came to my attention basically due to pop culture at the time and I had the opportunity to snatch an early publisher’s copy of it, I took it! I did kind of forget about it until I saw that it was releasing soon and I won’t lie, when I realized what it was about and I thought of the pop culture event that prompted me to get it, while on the one hand I was looking forward to finally reading Ms. Eddings, on the other hand, I was not feeling necessarily enthused about the book itself. Then when we met Eva and she started whining about her job and life at like two percent, I put the book down and dramatically spent several minutes regretting everything and questioning myself and my book choices. I say I was being dramatic because when I picked up Well, Actually again, I kid you not, by literally — I checked — the next percent of this book, we got into Rylie Cooper and my attitude completely changed and I was fully on board. I recognize the utter ridiculousness of that, but it’s true and I flipping wholeheartedly, passionately loved and couldn’t get enough of Well, Actually!

Eva and Rylie captured my full attention, I was so wholly invested in them, and at times, I could not drag myself away I loved them so much! They were so dear to me and I wanted nothing but the best for them. They were brilliant together and on their own. Their banter and humor was perfection, I loved their teasing and insults and just everything. I related to Eva in that we both hate having emotions and especially expressing them although that’s because I’m a Virgo while Eva has a more legitimate reason that tore my flipping heart out. I was truly devastated for her that she didn’t know how lovable and worthwhile she was and I’m so grateful that she and Rylie found their way back to each other. I also felt a lot of gratitude towards Rylie because he was so patient, kind, and compassionate to Eva and just everything she needed. I don’t want to make it seem like Eva was doing all the taking and none of the giving in their relationship as that’s not the case. Yes, she needed more reassurance than Rylie did, but it’s clear how devoted she was to him and would do anything for him even if the cost to herself was great. I don’t think that would be an issue in the fictional future of their fictional world though, and yes, I do think they’re a couple that would be together forever in the world that Mazey Eddings created.

After reading the Content Warnings page for Well, Actually, I was expecting an overall fun time, but knew there would also likely be difficult parts as well. Since I’ve never read Mazey Eddings before, I had no idea what to expect, but not very long after starting it, I did not expect to laugh so hard, I was wheezing and had my eyes watering and then I definitely did not think my eyes would be full of tears soon after that hilarious moment. Seriously, Ms. Eddings made me laugh my butt off and then she punched me in the gut, it was very rude! I’m not mad about it, but I was not prepared — I will be in the future though, because I am absolutely going to pick her up again! Well, Actually was fantastically wonderful, all my emotions were involved in this book, it made me laugh, made me cry several times, and it just made me so happy and grin so big it hurt a little. I’m beyond glad I read this, it’s one of my best of the year, and I know when I reflect on the books I read at the end of the year, Well, Actually will be one of the first ones I think about — I just loved and adored it so much!

RELEASE DAY REVIEW: Biggest Player by Sara Ney

Title: Biggest Player

Author: Sara Ney

Series: Not Yours, #2

Publisher: Montlake

Publication Date: July 29th, 2025

Synopsis:

Bestselling author Sara Ney scores with a fiery romance about online dating, where a single mom and a football pro ignite sparks when they swipe right—even though they know it’s all wrong.

Margot’s a busy single mom juggling teaching, parenting, and trying not to die alone. Dating apps? Total nightmare. But desperate times call for desperate swipes, even if they make her break out in stress hives. When she matches with a guy who looks too good to be true, she’s convinced he’s a walking red flag—or worse—a catfish.

Dex is hot, and he knows it. A quarterback with a killer smile and looks to spare, he’s a good guy looking for a long-term relationship. He wants what his friends have: someone to come home to…and if they’re naked when he gets there, even better. When he logs on for a casual scroll, he’s not expecting to meet her. One swipe, and suddenly he’s hooked.

Margot’s convinced he’s a catfish. Dex has zero dad bod and no dad energy. But their sizzling back-and-forth leaves them both thinking “what if.” After a surprise run-in leads to a mind-blowing (and soggy AF) kiss, their opposites-attract energy skyrockets. Can they find a way to make it last?

Sonja’s Review:

As I was finishing up Not Your Biggest Fan, I knew the epilogue was going to be in Dex’s POV and after loving Andy and Harlow so much, I wasn’t that excited to get his perspective and wanted it to be one of theirs instead. However, when I actually read the epilogue, it made me really look forward to picking up his book! I mean, I was going to regardless since I had an advanced copy of it, but sometimes I have problems reading books in a series back to back and while I wasn’t really worried that would be the case this time, Dex’s chapter definitely put that thought to rest and made it easier for me to start reading Biggest Player as soon as I had the chance.

There was a period of time in the beginning of me reading this book where I thought that I would love it even more than Not Your Biggest Fan, but then the main conflict of this book came into play and I was just not particularly thrilled with it or Dex. I will say, I feel like it was more annoying than super frustrating and that Margot was kept in the dark for a decent amount of time, but not so long it seemed like it dragged on forever and ever. While there was a portion of Biggest Player I didn’t care for, I enjoyed more of this book than I didn’t and though I didn’t have warm feelings for Dex for some time there, I got why he messed up, I don’t like it, he wasn’t being very smart, but he does have a good heart and he genuinely loves Margot and her daughter, Wyatt, and I was satisfied with how Margot and Dex handled the problem and then their reconciliation.

There was a big piece of me that did like/love Dex and I one hundred percent loved Margot! Dex is clueless and made me shake my head at best and want to shake him at worst, but he was a fun hero and ultimately I think that he’s good for Margot. Now, Margot is way better for him because she’s so awesome! She’s smart, strong, she lets him have it when it needs to happen, and she’s also just fun too. I loved these two, more so Margot and I loved Wyatt too — she’s great and smart and I loved the interactions between her and all the adults!

One of the things I loved about Not Your Biggest Fan was the banter between Andy and Harlow and that was true of Biggest Player as well. Everything flowed so well and naturally between Dex and Margot, Sara Ney is seriously excellent at writing banter! Biggest Player and I may have been at odds for a while there, but it mostly entertained and amused me and I had a good time with it. If Ms. Ney writes stories for the other two football players that we met in this book, I will for sure check them out since I liked them and I know the back and forth between them and their love interest will be fire!

Book One

Not Your Biggest Fan

Synopsis:

USA Today bestselling author Sara Ney sizzles with a quick-witted, sexy romp about an eager entrepreneur and a cocky football star who couldn’t be more different—or more into each other.

Harlow James is destined to rock the dating world. The creator of Kissmet, the app helping singles find love, she’s in New York to secure advertisers. But the sassy, small-town girl can’t help meddling in other people’s business.

When she runs into a muscular stranger at her go-to food truck, Harlow doesn’t realize he’s Landon “Andy” Burke, the NFL’s most-wanted free agent, in town to talk contracts. She just sees a hottie about to get burned by undercooked street food. Though she tries to warn him, he shrugs her off, making a little wager instead.

In a messy twist of fate, Andy finds himself in the same hotel as Harlow. When she collects on their bet, they make a mind-blowing—and bed-rocking—connection. But after the weekend, she goes home to Green Bay to her goofy dad and corgi, ready to focus everything on work again. Kissmet, however, has other ideas, when Andy knocks on her door…

Sonja’s Review:

It’s almost been five years since I’ve read Sara Ney and it was so nice picking up something from her again! I do want to say that there wasn’t one specific reason for the drought or anything like that, it was just me being me basically. Anyway, Not Your Biggest Fan wasn’t on my radar, but I’ve recently decided to get back into my blog and reading the early copies I’ve gotten from publishers and when I saw that the next book in this series, Biggest Player, was releasing soon, I thought that I should read that. I was pretty sure that it wasn’t the first book though, so I went looking and found Not Your Biggest Fan. I did actually also have a copy of that, but I borrowed it from KU, so Ms. Ney could get her coin.

As I was determined to read this and Biggest Player, I didn’t bother reading the synopsis because sometimes even when I really want to read a book, checking out the blurb can occasionally have the opposite effect on me and make me not want to read the book in that particular moment. I was taking no such chances with Not Your Biggest Fan and as a result, I will say that when I started this book, where I saw it going, it didn’t actually go and I was so happy about that! I was sure the plot was going to lead to Andy’s personal team having him use Harlow’s app and they would fake date to help with image problems and that was so not the case. I’m not the biggest fan (hehe pun intended) of the fake dating trope, so I was really relieved when the focus was mainly on Andy and Harlow’s budding relationship.

I had fun with Not Your Biggest Fan! There were some moments that made me cringe and go “oooof” semi hard, but for the most part I just had a good time. It’s very low stakes, not much drama or at least the drama’s amusing or over fairly quickly, Andy and Harlow actually have good communication, despite him not telling her who he is right away. It’s a little ridiculous with silly characters, but that wasn’t a bad thing and I really enjoyed it. I think it’d be a good book to pick up if you need a fun, light read. It was awesome and I’m looking forward to reading Biggest Player next!

He was the other half of my soul—the mirror to my every dark desire. My destruction, my redemption, my salvation: my Heathcliff.

Cathy Earnshaw's got the devil inside her—or at least that's what the small, cultish community she's spent her whole life trapped inside would say. With a secret as dark as hers, there's no hope of relief, or escape, or finding someone with a chance of understanding.

Sonja’s Review:

I don’t remember how I found Rebecca Kenney’s Charming Devil, but I did and I’ve wanted to read it ever since. I haven’t yet because I’m a procrastinator and it’s never available on Libby when I check and I’m weird about holds in that I worry I won’t want to read the book when it’s my turn, so I’ll either pass on it to make sure I’m giving the book as fair a chance as I can or I do check it out and run the risk of making somebody wait longer than they have to if I don’t read it right away or at all. I know it’s silly, but I try to be mindful about my library holds. Anyway, I had the chance to get an early copy of Ruthless Devotion from the publisher and I thought it would be a good opportunity to read Rebecca Kenney even though it wasn’t the book that me aware of her and while I’m not super attached to Wuthering Heights and co, I have read it and since I’m attracted to heroes like Heathcliff, I thought why not? And I am so glad that I did because I flipping loved Ruthless Devotion!

I felt locked into this book the moment I started reading and it was so easy to connect to Heathcliff and Cathy. I loved them and was rooting for them to get their freedom and happy ending so hard! I won’t lie, there were times when they really frustrated me and made me nervous, but they also warmed my heart and put big grins on my face too.

Honestly, the way Heathcliff and Cathy’s relationship made me feel was just reflective of the book as a whole which as I say that, it seems kind of like a “Duh!” statement, but there’s a lot of plot to this book in addition to their romance. Ruthless Devotion took me on an utterly wild ride where it made my heart pound and race, it had my clutching my kindle and on the metaphorical edge of my seat, flipping the pages as fast as I could, unable to tear myself away because I NEEDED to know what was going to happen next! I was completely invested in Heathcliff and Cathy, their story was beautiful and amazing, and Ruthless Devotion is definitely one of the best books I’ve read this year. I am just so intrigued with this fascinating supernatural world that Rebecca Kenney has created — it was very exciting and I can’t wait to see even more of it not only with the previous two books in the series, but any that come out the future!
