"We were perfect together. Until we met."
Misha
I can’t help but smile at the lyrics in her letter. She misses me.
In fifth grade, my teacher set us up with pen pals from a different school. Thinking I was a girl, with a name like Misha, the other teacher paired me up with her student, Ryen. My teacher, believing Ryen was a boy like me, agreed.
It didn’t take long for us to figure out the mistake. And in no time at all, we were arguing about everything. The best take-out pizza. Android vs. iPhone. Whether or not Eminem is the greatest rapper ever…
And that was the start. For the next seven years, it was us.
Her letters are always on black paper with silver writing. Sometimes there’s one a week or three in a day, but I need them. She’s the only one who keeps me on track, talks me down, and accepts everything I am.
We only had three rules. No social media, no phone numbers, no pictures. We had a good thing going. Why ruin it?
Until I run across a photo of a girl online. Name’s Ryen, loves Gallo’s pizza, and worships her iPhone. What are the chances?
F*ck it. I need to meet her.
I just don’t expect to hate what I find.
Ryen
He hasn’t written in three months. Something’s wrong. Did he die? Get arrested? Knowing Misha, neither would be a stretch.
Without him around, I’m going crazy. I need to know someone is listening. It’s my own fault. I should’ve gotten his phone number or picture or something.
He could be gone forever.
Or right under my nose, and I wouldn’t even know it.

Sonja's Review
Penelope Douglas has been an absolute favorite of mine ever since I read her Bully, so I'm always up for anything that she writes and Punk 57 was no different! I loved the synopsis, I adored the cover, and I just could NOT wait to get started on the story itself. Of course, though, once I got started I never wanted to stop - Punk 57 was truly incredible and I wholeheartedly loved, loved, loved it!
I'll be honest, I didn't really like Ryen at first, and she let me down a little because she wasn't being the best person she could be. It might get on your nerves a touch, but don't worry ladies and gents (if there are any gents who read this), because our man, Misha, definitely knows how to bring her back down to earth - and yes, I got a big kick out of that! As the story went on though, and Ryen started go become stronger and better, it wasn't long before I started liking her and liking her until the point came where I loved her as the heroine. I identified so much with what Ms. Douglas said in her note to us after I finished the book and she totally hit the nail on the head about what I was feeling when it came to Ryen. I won't tell you what she said, but I just want to say that even if you hate Ryen in the beginning, please, please, please give her a chance because she deserves one, she will make you change your mind about her, and I know that she will make you proud just like she's made me!
Although I loved Ryen, Misha was definitely my favorite person. He's so beautiful and raw and real and so full of depth and wisdom and heart. He has the soul of artist and he views the world in a way that is different from how a lot of other people look at it. Misha is all about standing up for what's right even when it's scary and hard - actually, especially then. He's amazing, he's passionate, and so many more things that I can't do him justice by trying to tell you about him. I fell head over heels for him and I have no doubts you will too because he's really special and who knows, he might just be my favorite hero of Ms. Douglas's after Madoc - which is saying a lot of you know me and how much I love Madoc!
Punk 57 captured me and drew me in so deeply that I never wanted to leave the world that I was in with it. It frustrated me and made me want to yell and rage, it pained me and made my heart ache and get squeezed a little too tight, it floored me and made me laugh and hoot and holler and there were times when it awed me and touched me and moved me. Punk 57 was beautiful and deep and meaningful - it was spectacular and inspiring and heartwarming. It was one of my favorite, best reads of the year!
Punk 57 is a standalone, it's told from Misha and Ryen's POV, they get their happily-ever-after, and I hope Ms. Douglas decides to come visit this world again because I completely fell in love with it and it's characters!
