REVIEW: Darkness by Karen Robards

Title: Darkness
Author: Karen Robards
Publisher: Gallery
Publication Date: March 29, 2016

Synopsis:
New York Times bestselling author Karen Robards continues her penchant for “fantastic storytelling” (RT Book Reviews) with this next heart-pumping romantic suspense novel, the tale of a brilliant ornithologist trapped on the remote Attu Island in Alaska, fighting for her life—and that of a handsome stranger—before they’re swallowed up in darkness forever.

BOOM. That’s the sound that changes everything for Dr. Gina Sullivan, a renowned ornithologist on a group research grant trip on the remote island of Attu, Alaska. When an everyday outing turns sinister at the onset of one of Attu’s infamous storms, Gina expects thunder and lightning—but what she doesn’t see coming is the small jet plane that drops out of the sky and into the water mere feet from her boat. Even more unprecedented: there’s a sole survivor from the crash, and he needs Gina’s help. But it turns out that rescuing the stranger and getting them both out of the oncoming storm is just the beginning. Because the more Gina learns about James “Cal” Callahan, he of brooding eyes and muscled frame, the more she fears—for herself, and for him.

Cal has made a career of trading on government secrets and emerging unscathed—until a routine pickup goes horribly wrong and lands him in ice-cold water. Literally. He knows the plane crash was no accident and that there could very well be an enemy force currently combing the Alaskan island ensuring there were no survivors. Now if only the arrestingly beautiful bird-watcher with the clear-blue gaze would stop watching him, well, like a hawk. Cal convinces Gina to return to base camp and help him covertly get off the island. But when Gina makes it safely back to camp and finds her entire team murdered, all bets are off, and as darkness envelops the island, she must decide: trust a man she barely knows, or go it alone and risk running straight into the arms of a killer?

Excerpt:
The guy was seriously big, and seriously buff. Ordinarily Gina might have found that attractive. Okay, she did find it—him—attractive. Under the circumstances, however, alarm was the more appropriate response.

Once more she wondered who he was. She didn’t even know his name. Which, now that she thought about it, was ridiculous.

She looked up from unbuttoning his cuff. “Think you could tell me your name now? Seeing as how I’m taking off your clothes?”

His eyes were dark and unreadable as they met hers. “I thought—no suggestive comments.”

Gina moved on to the other cuff. “That wasn’t a suggestive comment. It was an illustrative one, designed to make the point that, under the circumstances, I should probably have something to call you besides, hey, popsicle boy. So, name?”

“Popsicle boy?” His lips twitched. For just a moment a flare of amusement lit his eyes. But still he seemed to hesitate. Why? God, she didn’t want to know. Gina had just flicked another, frowning glance at him when he said, “Cal.”

“Cal?” He didn’t respond. “Cal—what?”

“Let’s just stick with Cal.”

Sonja's Review

If I see Karen Robards' name on a book, I want to read it - no questions asked, I don't need to read the synopsis - I just want to read it because she wrote it. She's one of my favorites, I've loved every book of hers that I've read and Darkness was certainly no exception! In fact, I wholeheartedly, positively loved it - it was simply amazing!

Gina tugged on my heartstrings a little, but for a big chunk of the book, I got such a kick out of her! I loved how she handled Cal and how feisty and fierce she was with him. It was so entertaining to watch their banter and see what she thought of him. I also loved how strong and brave and just good Gina is. She's had a painful past, but she still wants to help Cal and save him and she really takes on her fears and conquers them. Gina is so wonderful and I completely loved her.

And I loved Cal too! That is one sexy hero we've got on our hands here! He's a total alpha - he's big, strong, capable, commanding, confident, and protective. As if that wasn't enough, he's got the charm going too. Cal is serious but he's also funny and playful and he knows when and how to lighten the mood - I just totally adored him. He stole my heart and I have no doubts he'll steal yours.

Going into Darkness, I had no idea what what it was about or what to expect, but I wasn't worried about it all. And I was right not to worry because   captured me from the very first page and held my attention all the way to the very last one. There was danger, heartache, sexual tension, and I loved all of it! I loved the wit, I loved the sarcasm, I loved the banter, and I loved the sweet moments too. Darkness warmed my heart, made it pound, and I can't tell you how much I enjoyed reading it - it was incredible!

Darkness is a standalone, it's told from Gina and Cal's POV, and their happy ending had me grinning from ear to ear and gave me warm fuzzies inside!
