I cannot believe that I have had Marie Force on my kindle for years and this is just the first time I've read one of her books. I have without a doubt been missing out on an amazing author and her equally amazing Gansett Island series. I loved Desire After Dark from the moment I started reading it and my love for it only grew the more that I read - it was absolutely outstanding!
I had my ups and downs with Erin but I loved her through it all. Erin is a bit of a worrier and definitely has her weak moments and times where she can't decide what to do which got my goat a little, but when I looked back on everything she's been through since her twin's death, it is easy to see that she's come a long way and that she is incredibly strong - I really came to admire and respect her for that. And while I loved her strength, I loved the way she was Slim even more. She has her serious moments with him but she's also playful and teasing and just fun with him. Erin becomes a lighter, stronger, happier, hopeful person with Slim around and I couldn't help but love her for that. She is an excellent heroine and I'm so glad she's found her happiness.
I think it's pretty safe to say that I fell in love with Slim almost or as soon as I met him - he is exactly my kind of guy. He's the funny, playful guy who's always making jokes, being silly, and just making you laugh. Slim was impossible not to love not only because of his humor and lightness, but also because of his sweetness, kindness, and his patience and understanding with Erin. He accepts her for who she is and he never tries to change her. Slim is the kind of guy who always has your back and you know that he loves you for you and while he'll encourage you to be the best person you can be and experience new things, he won't pressure into anything you're not ready for. He is beyond an amazing heroine and I have a feeling that he'll always be one of my favorite heroes in this series.
Desire After Dark is a marvelous story full of beauty, magic, hope, and depth. It has its heartbreaking moments, it's frustrating ones, and times where it brought tears to my eyes both in sadness and happiness. It gave me tons of laughs, there were times when I absolutely could not stop smiling, and there were plenty of moments that warmed my heart.
Ms. Force has so completely charmed and enchanted me with her world of Gansett and all the wonderful people who live there. It's so warm and inviting that you feel like you belong there just as much as the characters do. I can't believe that it took me this long to find this series, but now that I have, nothing will stop me from reading the other books that have come before Desire After Dark or any that come after. Ms. Force has earned herself a fan for life with me and I can't wait to read more of her!
Desire After Dark is a standalone and even though it's told from multiple points of view and I'm new to the Gansett Island series, I never felt confused or overwhelmed being in the other characters of Gansett's heads - I actually really loved and looked forward to it. Don't worry, we see a lot of Slim and Erin and I can't wait to see them living out their happily-ever-after in the books to come!
