Z is the latest in Larissa Ione’s incredible Demonica Underworld Series brought to you by the amazing team at 1001 Dark Nights! Be sure you grab your copy of this sexy new novella today!
Zhubaal, fallen angel assistant to the Grim Reaper, has spent decades searching for the angel he loved and lost nearly a century ago. Not even her death can keep him from trying to find her, not when he knows she’s been given a second chance at life in a new body. But as time passes, he’s losing hope, and he wonders how much longer he can hold to the oath he swore to her so long ago…
As an emim, the wingless offspring of two fallen angels, Vex has always felt like a second-class citizen. But if she manages to secure a deal with the Grim Reaper — by any means necessary — she will have earned her place in the world. The only obstacle in the way of her plan is a sexy hardass called Z, who seems determined to thwart her at every turn. Soon it becomes clear that they have a powerful connection rooted in the past…but can any vow stand the test of time?
“So,” she said, changing the subject before she got all sappy or started crying or some shit. “What do Ipsylum do? You said they’re warriors?”
He nodded. “Highly trained, very powerful. In some ways, they’re more powerful than archangels. If angels are Heaven’s army, then Ipsylum are the army’s special ops team.”
“Huh.” She idly ran her fingers down the stiletto heel of one boot to test the sharp edge of the spikes that could punch through metal, bone, and flesh during a fight. Her mother’s design. “What does Heaven need with a special ops team?”
Zhubaal came to his feet in a graceful surge and moved to the glassless window next to her bed. A breeze ruffled his hair as he looked out over the courtyard.
“Heaven needs specialized people to assassinate powerful demons, spy in areas of Sheoul where not even Archangels can go, rescue human or angel hostages from demons...shit like that.” He clenched his hands at his sides, and she wondered if he regretted his choice to leave his angelic life.
“That’s awesome.” Why couldn’t she have been born an angel instead of an emim with useless powers like attracting souls like flypaper or being able to walk in stiletto heels on any surface without ever loosing her balance? Sure, she had killer reflexes and was stronger than your average human or demon, but still, in a world where angels could fly and demons could shapeshift or become invisible or manipulate the weather, she had to stretch to be considered even average. “If I were an angel, I’d want to be one of those.”
He snorted. “Somehow, I’m not surprised.”
Frowning, he glanced down at her arm and the remaining two glyphs. “Because you’re the polar opposite of Laura.”
“What does she have to do with it?”
“Laura was also an Ipsylum.”
“No,” she blurted, seriously thrown by that. The way he’d spoken of this Laura person made her sound like a milquetoast. “Really?”
“Really.” There was a tap at the door, and he answered it, thanking whoever was on the other side for a plate piled with sandwiches and fruit. He brought it over to her and placed it on the mattress beside her. “Eat. I have a feeling we’re going on a little trip soon.”
I completely fell in love with the Demonica series after I read Revenant, so I can't tell you how excited I was to read Z! I did a little happy dance both when Z appeared on my kindle and when I opened it up to read - I am just a total, crazy fangirl when it comes to Larissa Ione and her books now. And what a fantastic book Z was - I fell in love with it almost as soon as I started reading it - it was so familiar, fun, and almost magnetic the way it pulled me in so fast!
Just like I fell in love with the book almost immediately, I also fell in love with Vex! Vex is sassy, playful, teasing, and a complete and utter bada*s chick. She's the kind of tough, strong woman who can take care of herself and handle everything that comes her way. Vex is confident, passionate, and bold, but she does have this soft, vulnerable side that endeared her to me even more. She knows who she is and she is just herself and that what I loved most about Vex - although, really, I loved everything about her!
Well, Revenant will always be my number one favorite, but I still loved Z! I mean, sometimes he really messes up and you just shake your head because you can't shake him, but other than that there's nothing not to love about him. He's protective, possessive, sweet, and he's devoted to keeping his oath to Laura. Even though I wanted him to love Vex wholly, I had to admire and appreciate that devotion and his patience. Don't worry, Z does come to his senses eventually though and there was no doubt in my mind that he loves Vex or that he'll be the best mate he can be for her. Z is an awesome hero and I fell more in love with the more I got to know him!
Z might be a short, fast read but it's full of heart. It's funny and entertaining, it has some heartache and action, and it definitely has heat. Z made me laugh a lot, it thrilled me, and I enjoyed every bit of it! It was absolutely wonderful and I wholeheartedly loved it!
Z is a standalone in the Demonica series, it's told from Z and Vex's POV, and they had one happily-ever-after ending that made me giddy and had me grinning like an idiot!
